The Florida Keys have nine Florida Park Service units, including John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Key Largo Hammock State Botanical Site on Key Largo, Windley Key State Geologic Site in the Upper Keys, Indian Key State Historic Site and Lignumvitae Key State Botanical Site in the Matecumbe Keys, Long Key State Recreation Area at Layton, Bahia Honda State Park on Bahia Honda Key, Shell Key State Preserve in the Lower Keys, and Fort Zachery Taylor State Historic Site at Key West. The parks are managed to preserve and protect land or areas that represent 'Original Natural Florida," (i.e. before the first Europeans arrived) while allowing only compatible recreation. Public access to Shell Key is prohibited, and access to Windley Key is by appointment only.
